Alphabetland is the eighth studio album by American punk rock band X. Released digitally in April 2020, it is their first studio release in 27 years and the first with their original line-up in the past 35 years. The release has received positive reviews from critics. Alphabetland was recorded across several sessions in 2019 and 2020 with producer Rob Schnapf, who has previously worked with Elliott Smith, Beck, and Joyce Manor.

Even though these songs date from a time when the band's only songwriters were vocalist Exene Cervenka and Doe, all tracks are credited to all four members of X and the recording sessions coincided with the individual musicians improving their relationships with one another.

The Naked And Famous - Recover [2LP] Recover [2LP]

Vinyl LP pressing including digital download. 2020 release from the indie pop duo. The Naked and Famous' album reasserts the group as one of modern indie-pop's most exciting sonic trailblazers, taking them to emotionally inspired depths, while maintaining the fresh effervescence that has led to over 600 million collective streams to date. While they have sonically mastered the art of dreamy, hook-laden synth-pop, The Naked and Famous have stuck to their guns as far as intimate storytelling. Recover is largely an autobiographical record rooted in a powerful sentiment of survival, and of the very human process of self-preservation - of saving, choosing and celebrating oneself in a world constantly trying to put us down.

Starfucker (STRFKR) - Future Past Life [Opaque Orange LP] Future Past Life [Opaque Orange LP]

STRFKR has always been a constantly evolving entity, growing over the years from rambunctious beginnings into the manicured electro-pop perfection they exhibited on their last studio album, 2016's pristine Being No One, Going Nowhere. New album Future Past Life breaks new ground, dialing back some of the high-gloss production they're known for to craft songs that are stripped down, spaced out and somehow as visceral as they are dream-like.

In 2014, STRFKR's principal songwriter/lead vocalist Josh Hodges was staying in Amsterdam for a few months, working on the music that became 2016's Being No One, Going Nowhere. By complete chance, a European traveller who was crashing at Hodges' house in L.A. while he was abroad connected him with some like-minded musicians in Amsterdam, Mathias Janmat and David Hoogerheide. Even though they were more or less strangers, the three musicians clicked almost instantly, coming up with new songs that would eventually make up the bulk of Future Past Life. The immaculate but danceable pop that has long been STRFKR's calling card is pushed into exciting new places on Future Past Life. It's a strange and beautiful sonic environment, one that finds STRFKR growing as they embrace the chance and spontaneity that brought these songs about in the first place.

Starfucker (STRFKR) $22.98   $19.99 Digital: $9.99

Her 2016 release The Bird and the Rifle netted three Grammy nominations, along with Americana Music Association nods––all firsts for McKenna as an artist. Then, she made history: In 2016, she became the first woman ever to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year two years in a row thanks to co-writing Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and penning Tim McGraw’s no. 1 “Humble and Kind” solo. Both songs also clinched back-to-back Grammy wins for Best Country Song. In 2017, she became the Academy of Country Music’s first female Songwriter of the Year. The Tree [2018], her eleventh studio album, was nominated for the 2019 Americana Awards Album of the Year. 2020 brings a new record for McKenna, "The Balladeer", produced by Dave Cobb.

Working with just four acoustic-based musicians, intimacy was the goal. Memphis strings and horns, guest appearances from Randy Newman (“Bigger Boat”) and guitarist John Osborne color in the sketches – creating a depth to what is easily Clark’s most revelatory record yet

The power of a Winter song is hard to describe, like how the delicate world building of a good book can be more compelling than real life. Guided By Voices - Vampire On Titus [Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Opaque Yellow LP] Vampire On Titus [Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Opaque Yellow LP]

We are pleased to announce a new vinyl pressing of the classic Guided by Voices album, Vampire on Titus. Although there were several different pressings in the 1990s, this is the first since 1998. This edition features a new master cut at Golden, is packaged in a sturdy tip-on jacket, and includes Bob's original insert, now enlarged to a more readable size. A limited quantity will be available on opaque yellow vinyl, the remainder virgin black.

Originally released in 1993, Vampire was not unique at that time in it's 4 track recording methodology, but it was perhaps the first to garner major media attention. Many minds were blown, and a few were baffled enough to return the album to the store, believing the crude sound meant their copy was defective. Vampire occupies a unique place in the GBV discography. The album is a snapshot of a brief time in the band's history, a turning point after having broken up the previous year. It does not include any older or last minute material. Although sonically consistent, the songs exhibit tremendous variety, skirting several genres and many moods. The lineup is just a trio: Robert Pollard and brother Jimmy with Tobin Sprout. Although it could be described as one of GBV's "difficult" LPs, it has several songs that could've been standouts on Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes. It was their first album that was not self-released. It is an innocent album, unaware of it's audience, and fearless to the core as only true outsiders can be. As such, Vampire on Titus is an essential piece for even the more casual fan of the band. It's also just a damn good album that's held up to repeated listens for a quarter century.

Guided By Voices $22.98
Jesse Dayton - Gulf Coast Sessions EP [Vinyl] Gulf Coast Sessions EP [Vinyl]

“The Gulf Coast Sessions was inspired by that Interstate 10 area from Beaumont to New Orleans, where I was raised and where the old music was still going strong in the 70’s when I was a kid. East Texas African-American blues & gospel was everywhere, with lots of revival church music on the radio. Some of the honky tonks & juke joints that had opened long before, during the Lucas Gusher & the Spindle Top Oil Rush, were still in full swing with live bands nightly. We had 24 hour south Louisiana zydeco & Cajun radio w/ DJs speaking broken French. We had the migrant workers cranking up Mexican balladeers who were out-singing everyone on the radio. I remember seeing the Winter Brothers,(Johnny & Edgar), at the Dairy Queen and feeling like they had left behind the small town fear of the Holy Ghost & gone global w/ the Devil’s music. I thought about all of these scenarios while we were making this raw little stripped down record. This EP was recorded on the back porch of Clay Connell’s old house-turned-vintage-shop Roadhouse Rags in South Austin with zero budget just for kicks. Since I ended up playing guitars, bass, drums & piano on it, (everything except for Beth Christman on fiddle & Bradley Jaye on accordion), Clay & I we’re basically goofing off trying to create these imaginary fictional characters in “the band.” The “Beaumonster”’was our character’s name for our blues shouter singer-guitar-man. The joke was “Peanut was the only drummer we could get for the session” because of my overtly simple drum parts. Anyway, we went for the Excello label vibe w/ our own spin & I wrote all the songs on the spot as we recorded them. It’s a different kind of record for me & we hope y’all dig it in the greasy good timin’ spirit it’s intended.”

Jesse Dayton $16.98

Big Bill Broonzy - The Midnight Special: Live In Nottingham 1957 [LP] The Midnight Special: Live In Nottingham 1957 [LP]

Born in Mississippi, "Big Bill Broonzy" - the name refers to his 6' 6" physical stature - remains largely unsung as far as a household name, despite recording several hundred songs, many of which he wrote. From the late 1920s through the late 1950s, this immensely prolific blues performer won over fellow musicians and "race music" fans alike. Nearly every label - notably Okeh, Paramount, and Vocalion, in the early days and later Folkways, Mercury, Victor, and Columbia, among them - released Broonzy records during and after his lifetime. As mentor to Muddy Waters and a major influence on artists like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Rod Stewart, Broonzy's impact on music cannot be understated.

This solo performance captures Big Bill's affable personality and ability to hold the attention of an appreciative audience with his storytelling, acoustic guitar licks, and a strong singing voice that leaves an indelible impression that this man had experiences in the fields, the factories, and the railroads. The 1957 Nottingham set list largely consists of folk standards including "The Midnight Special," and "This Train," on which you can hear a little Elvis Presley swing, as Broonzy's introduction slyly alludes to some "rockin' and rollin'" cultural appropriation; we know what came first. Exhibiting the talent of any great song stylist, Broonzy makes all his own "The Glory of Love," an often-covered chestnut since the 1930s. On "What Kind Of Man Jesus Is," Broonzy harks back to his religious roots. He's self-deprecating on "In the Evening," quipping that it killed it's composer, another friend. "I hope it doesn't kill me." Three months after this concert, Big Bill learned he had lung cancer, to which he succumbed at 65 years old in August 1958. The record was mastered from original analog tape by Dave Gardner at Infrasonic Mastering, and pressed at Furnace Record Pressing.

Jon Hassell - Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two) Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two)

A companion piece to 2018's Listening To Pictures, this second volume in the pentimento series presents eight new tracks by the music visionary, continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of recombination and musical gene-splicing. Pentimento is defined as the 'reappearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over' and this is evident in the innovative production style that 'paints with sound' using overlapping nuances to create an undefinable and intoxicating new palette.

Haken - Virus [2LP] Virus [2LP]

Since releasing ‘Vector’ in October 2018, Haken have completed headline tours the world over, played sold-out shows across Europe and North America as support for Devin Townsend and picked up a Prog award for their efforts too! All the while, they have been quietly, secretly working on the follow-up album, entitled ‘Virus’. Drummer Ray Hearne reveals, “since releasing ‘The Mountain’ in 2013, one question has been asked of us time and time again, ‘who is the Cockroach King?’. This is something we were interested in exploring more deeply too, so we essentially did that through our music; elaborating and expanding upon the intervallic, harmonic, rhythmic and lyrical themes of that song. The end result is in an arc which spans across two albums: ‘Vector’ and ‘Virus’”. Once again, Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood has mixed what is perhaps the most eclectic Haken album to date, with the 7 tracks revealing hints of influences from multiple genres, all intertwined with Haken’s own recognisable sound.

Andre Bratten - Silvester [LP] Silvester [LP]

A lot has been written about seminal Norwegian black metal band Mayhem but André Bratten's new record for Smalltown Supersound surfaces a little known story about the group. In 1986-87, years before their 1993 debut record, guitarist Øystein Aarseth (aka Euronymous) took a musical pilgrimage to Germany to solicit collaboration with one of his musical heroes. Øystein, who tragically was destined to be murder by former member Varg Vikernes in 1993, bought an Interrail ticket and travelled from Norway to Germany to seek out experimental musician Conrad Schnitzler. Conrad was the founder of West German Krautock incubating club the Zodiac Free Arts Lab in West Berlin in 1968 and a former member of Tangerine Dream and Kluster (key experimental groups in the development of industrial music and Kosmiche electronic music). Øystein sat outside Schnitzler's house and refused to leave until he was allowed in to talk. His persistence paid off, with Schnitzler surprisingly agreeing to write a piece of music for Mayhem. The piece of music became "Silvester Anfang", the first track and introduction to Mayhem's classic debut "Deathcrush". A detailed percussive number, Mayhem still open their heavy live shows with this music today. When Mayhem founder Jørn "Necrobutcher" Stubberud told the story behind "Silvester Anfang" to Bratten at a party, they immediately had the idea that Bratten should remix or rework this little known track. Totally absorbed in the sounds of Schnitzler and it's strange and unusual pairing with Mayhem, Bratten started out with a plan to make one remix. He ended up with a series of tracks inspired by both Schnitzler's intro and the sounds of the debut record "Deathcrush". The results transpired into a mutation of Conrad Schnitzler, Mayhem and André Bratten. "Silvester" is Mayhem and Schnitzler reimagined. Or deconstructed and then rebuilt. However you term it, a remix turned into a new André Bratten unlike any he has recorded before, haunted by the echoes of Mayhem's grisly legacy as well as Klusters early industrial music's concrte looped experiments. 5 new tracks and 50 minutes of new music. An album of abstract freeform structures morphing elements of kraut, techno, ambient, black metal, industrial, minimalist and drone. A perfect fusion of two dystopian extremes of Norwegian underground music.

Andre Bratten $20.98
