    Andrew Combs - Ideal Man

Andrew Combs - Ideal ManAndrew Combs - Ideal ManAndrew Combs - Ideal Man - New West Records
On his new album, ‘Ideal Man,’ Andrew Combs worked with producer/engineer Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby, Benjamin Booker) to achieve a more raw, direct sound. The collection was captured live in Cohen’s Brooklyn studio, with compact arrangements fueled by taut, elastic grooves. While Combs may be best known as a singer/songwriter in the classic 1970’s Laurel Canyon sense, he proves the true versatility of his work here, often setting his acoustic aside in favor of atmospheric synthesizers and distorted electric guitars. Combs worked with some of his favorite writers on the album, including Dylan LeBlanc, Jeff Trott, Joe Henry, and Kenny Childers, but the stories he tells here are deeply personal and remarkably vulnerable.  A sense of danger and violence underlies the entire record, much as it does the entire country, but it only serves to make the moments of beauty and connection here that much more poignant. Life is short and the clock is ticking. Andrew Combs doesn’t plan to waste a second.

Their most recent album, Mud, reached No. 1 on the iTunes country chart with single "Stone" hitting Top 10 all genre and their fifth studio album, which they self-produced for the first time, is set for release this fall. In 1964, the National Film Board of Canada asked John Coltrane to record the soundtrack for a French-language film titled “Le chat dans le sac” (“The Cat in the Bag”). In June of that year, Coltrane’s ‘Classic Quartet’ entered Rudy Van Gelder’s studio and recorded five previously-recorded Coltrane originals. For many years, viewers of the film who recognized the music thought that they were listening to the original recordings, though in fact they were new and had never been heard.

Jon Pardi - Heartache MedicationJon Pardi - Heartache MedicationJon Pardi - Heartache Medication - Capitol Nashville
Platinum-selling artist Jon Pardi announced his highly-anticipated new album, tour and single titled Heartache Medication. Set for release on September 27, Pardi's upcoming album, Heartache Medication, includes the album's lead single and title track Co-written by Pardi, Barry Dean and Natalie Hemby, Pardi revealed the new single showcases a taste of what is to come on the next record exclusively to the Associated Press, noting the songs lift you up. They put you in a higher place. "The single 'Heartache Medication' has an 80's George Strait 'Fool Hearted Memory' feel to it, and is something people can dance to, said Pardi. That's something I really wanted for this album. There really are no sad songs on this record-it covers a range of subjects, but is ultimately about moving on, and having a good time. Recognized for his "state-of-the-art blend of traditional instrumentation and progressive grooves that points to country's future (Rolling Stone) and as a leader among a growing number of artists bringing back fiddle, steel and twang while still finding ways to freshen the sound (People), Pardi again serves as a co-producer on the new album, Heartache Medication. Heartache Medication is the follow up to Pardi's co-produced Platinum-selling breakthrough #1 album California Sunrise, which featured Multi-Platinum, chart-topping hits including Dirt on My Boots, Head Over Boots, Heartache on the Dancefloor and Night Shift." The CMA and ACM Award-winner also revealed plans for his HEARTACHE MEDICATION TOUR

What happens when a nation that was born to run, and to rev engines into the wild frontier, runs into the full stop that is our current social and political climate? The answer, my friend, is somewhere “In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights,” as The New Pornographers would have it on their eighth album. There’s a deep climatic unease running through these 11 tracks that’s matched only by the sheer musical glee with which the band addresses the prevailing mood of the moment. It’s an album in which foreboding and bliss somehow go hand in hand—mixing founder A.C. Newman’s nearly symphonic levels of pop arrangement and harmony with a careening quality that feels unsafe at any speed (to quote the famous Ralph Nader phrase that the opening track also borrows).

    New Releases 13 September 2019

Korn - The Nothing - Roadrunner Records
Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis elaborated on the forthcoming LP: “Deep, within our Earth lives an extraordinary force. Very few are aware of the magnitude and significance of this place where good/evil, dark/light, bliss/torment, loss/gain and hope/despair all exist as one - pulling at us every moment of our lives. It’s not something we can choose to navigate, but rather an awareness of this ‘presence’ that surrounds us with every breath, as if we are being watched at every moment. It’s the place where black and white energies attach themselves to our souls, and shape our emotion, choices, perspective and ultimately our very existence. There is a miraculous and small realm within this vortex and it’s the only place where balance between these dynamic and polarizing forces exists-where the soul finds its refuge. Welcome to…..The Nothing.”

The Lumineers - III - Dualtone Music Group
Two-time GRAMMY-nominated band The Lumineers are back with their third album, III, a cinematic piece presented as a narrative in three chapters, with each one centering on one main character. III’s concept began while the band was writing in the Catskill mountains, where producer Simone Felice works. Decidedly darker than their previous work in concept, but replete with their trademark expressive vocals and dynamic arrangements, III boldly and expertly goes in an artistic direction not yet traveled by the band. The Lumineers have enjoyed substantial commercial success; their 2012 self-titled debut featuring the hit single “Ho Hey” was certified triple-platinum in 2018, and their sophomore album Cleopatra was certified platinum in the same year after its 2016 release. They’ve had multiple #1 hits on the Triple A and Alternative radio charts, and have sold out tours across the world; over 300,000 tickets were sold on 2017’s Cleopatra world tour. The Lumineers have also supported icons and their musical heroes on the road, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and U2’s Joshua Tree tour.

Hobo Johnson - The Fall of Hobo Johnson - Reprise
The last album was called The Rise of Hobo Johnson, and it really lived up to its name. Self-produced, self-recorded, and originally self-released in late 2017, it powered a breakout year that most musicians can only dream of, beginning with the backyard performance of “Peach Scone” that brought Hobo Johnson (née Frank Lopes Jr.) YouTube viewers by the millions, and ending with a huge, intensely devoted fan base early, anticipating his next move. That next move is called The Fall of Hobo Johnson, which is (Frank hopes) more of a metaphorical title. It’s about all of the things that Frank (the person) has gone through while Hobo Johnson (the persona) has been blowing up. Namely, a lot of falling: falling in love, falling out of it, and falling apart when it was over.

Devendra Banhart - Ma - Nonesuch
Ma is a dedication to motherhood. The title of the album comes from the realization that the word 'Ma' is a very good candidate for our first utterance and our very last whisper, the word itself means 'Mother' in countless languages. The record contains 3 parallel narratives all pointing back to motherhood. The first is one of loss and helplessness, the narrative of a mother who reluctantly had to put up her child for adoption, still loving them, but unable to be with them. This became a metaphor for my own personal experience of observing my family in Venezuela, not being able to help in any meaningful way, and the constant feeling of complete helplessness. The second narrative is everything I would ever say to the children I may or may not have. The third narrative is one of celebration, of recognizing the Mother in each being, and of gratitude for music and its mothering qualities.  Ma was recorded in Big Sur and Los Angeles, CA and was produced, arranged, and recorded with my longtime collaborator Noah Georgeson. It features appearances by many, including Cate Le Bon and Vashti Bunyan, the archetype of a mother. It will be out September 13, 2019.-Devendra Banhart

M83 - DSVII [Limited Edition Pink Galaxy 2LP]

M83 - DSVII [Limited Edition Pink Galaxy 2LP]

New Vinyl: $30.98

Mute will release M83’s Digital Shades Vol. 2 on September 20, 2019. It will be available in limited edition pink galaxy
color double vinyl, CD, and digital formats. Anthony Gonzalez (M83) spoke with his brother and creative partner
Yann Gonzalez about the record, saying the below:

At first there was this vivid memory of Dungeons and Dragons, this childhood sensation of living in an imaginary world set in a faraway past or a lost future. I wanted to create some music that could be part of this adventure and journey with all of its solitary knights, dreamy landscapes, strange animals, forgotten myths and old spells.

Originally, the Digital Shades project was supposed to be much more intimate – a collection of B-sides and unused tracks destined for the hardcore fan base. Digital Shades was the name chosen to dissociate it from a proper studio album, although it would be fully part of M83’s discography. Digital Shades became an excuse to give a second life to some tracks instead of letting them disappear into the void. I wanted to create a production of ambient music that could evolve throughout the years. With Vol. 2, I wanted to come back with something stronger that featured the depth of a proper studio album without the
pressure of providing pop music – faraway from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and Junk.

The inspiration behind this record is mainly video game music. It felt so refreshing to play all of these old school games again. I wanted to be surrounded by nature and the past. I would only feed myself with older art. It’s almost as if I couldn’t stand living in the present. This is probably why it was important for me to only use analog equipment for this record. We recorded everything with vintage equipment in my studio and at Justin Meldal-Johnsen’s studio in Glendale, California during final production.

The Shelters - Jupiter Sidecar [LP]

The Shelters - Jupiter Sidecar [LP]

New Vinyl: $18.98

The Shelters fan a fresh flame with classic fuel on their upcoming second full-length, Jupiter Sidecar to be released on September 20 via Warner Records. Ebbing and flowing between rock ‘n’ roll roots, surf swagger, synth swells, and unassuming pop ambition, the Los Angeles-based group—Chase Simpson [vocals, guitar], Josh Jove [guitar, vocals], and Sebastian Harris [drums]— thread it all together with catchy melodic hooks and handcrafted instrumentation. This approach quietly cemented them as a fan and critical favorite following the release of their self-titled full-length, The Shelters, in 2016. Produced by none other than the late Tom Petty, the debut garnered widespread praise from the likes of W Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Paste who noted, “The band’s sound successfully marries elements of ‘70s and ‘80s rock and roll with a modern flair.” Meanwhile, the boys racked up close to 14 million total streams with the single “Rebel Heart” and toured alongside The Head and the Heart, Royal Blood, The Killers, Gary Clark Jr., Band Of Horses, BRONCHO, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch and more, logging over hundreds of shows in two years.

Describing the Durham-basedHiss Golden Messengeris like trying to grasp a forgotten word: It’s always on the tip of your tongue, but hard to speak. Songwriter and bandleader M.C. Taylor’s music is at once familiar, yet impossible to categorize: Elements from the American songbook—the steady, churning acoustic guitar and mandolin, the gospel emotion, the eerie steel guitar tracings, the bobbing and weaving organ and electric piano—provide the bedrock for Taylor’s existential ruminations about parenthood, joy, hope, and loneliness—our delicate, tightrope balance of dark and light—that offer fully engaged contemporary commentary on the present. And then there’s an indescribable spirit and movement: Hiss Golden Messenger’s music grooves. There’s nothing else quite like it.

Molly Sarlé - Karaoke Angel [LP]

Molly Sarlé - Karaoke Angel [LP]

New Vinyl: $19.98

From the cliffs of Big Sur to the North Carolina backwoods - Molly Sarlé brings open-hearted, unflinching songwriting perfect for late-night karaoke comedowns, plaintive morning walks, and conjuring the spirit world. West Coast incantations with a warm, Appalachian glow. Her debut album, Karaoke Angel, is a collection of songs by a woman who was born understanding that her ability to feel - deeply and without shame - is her greatest strength. It is the result of a free and open-hearted devotion to the search for passion, and the complete, unwavering depiction of truth. Molly’s songs observe their own kind of internal logic, always a few steps behind or ahead of where you expect them to be - occasionally funny, always uncannily real. The work on 'Karaoke Angel' began in a trailer on the Pacific coast and continued with stints in Los Angeles and Durham, NC. Recorded in a church-turned-recording studio in Woodstock, NY, a minimal but carefully assembled palette of guitar, bass, and percussion form the foundation; an orchestra of unrecognizable atmospherics bounce off the high ceilings—but Molly’s delicate, expressive voice is always at the center.

Herb Alpert - Over The Rainbow

Herb Alpert - Over The Rainbow

New CD: $13.98   $12.98

On his latest album, OVER THE RAINBOW, Herb Alpert began the same way he has done for all of his albums over the years: searching for great melodies. That search has resulted in the prolific trumpeter’s latest offering, a collection of 11 classics and 1 brand new, original track. That original song, “Skinny Dip”, opens the album with a quirky, fun vibe before things move on to recognizable tunes from the great American songbook, which are included for various reasons close to Herb’s heart. He felt the danger in the tightrope walk of recording his own version of the iconic “Over The Rainbow”, which was cemented within pop culture by Judy Garland's performance and many other fantastic recordings. And whether it’s a tribute to Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt on “All Love”, Bill Withers on “Ain’t No Sunshine”, or the great Louis Armstrong on “What A Wonderful World”, there is always a deeper connection and meaning for Herb on every cover selected for this album, making it one of the most personal projects he has ever worked on. OVER THE RAINBOW will be available everywhere on September 20 from Herb Alpert Presents.

Marco Benevento - Let It Slide [LP]

Marco Benevento - Let It Slide [LP]

New Vinyl: $18.98

It's impossible not to hear freedom and excitement coursing through the veins of Marco Benevento's seventh studio album, Let It Slide. Produced by Leon Michels (The Arcs, Lee Fields), the record introduces a gritty, soulful edge to Benevento's brand of high-octane keyboard wizardry an uptempo, uplifting sound he playfully describes as hot dance piano rock. For all Benevento's virtuosity on the keys though, the songs here are driven primarily by intoxicating grooves, with spare drums and minimalist bass lines underpinning infectious, intentionally lo-fi vocal hooks. The resulting vibe is a timeless one, filtering elements of vintage R&B and soul through modern indie rock and pop sensibilities and peppering it with the kind of adventurous improvisation that Benevento's come to be celebrated for worldwide. Acceptance is a recurring theme on the record, and Benevento's songs often find themselves recognizing that contentment can come only once you've freed yourself from the chains of desire and regret. Upon close listen, one can find Benevento's own personal philosophies subconsciously bubbling up throughout the songs. You ll feel better, I ll just say / When you finally let it go, he sings on the funky Say It s All The Same, which features vocal contributions from bandmate Karina Rykman. The hazy Solid Gold celebrates the simple joy of being in the moment with someone you love, while the Lennon-esque Lorraine (co-written with Simone Felice) grapples with loss and change, and the anthemic Send It On A Rocket contemplates loneliness and connection. Dubbed one of the most talented keys players of our time by CBS Radio, Benevento's released critically acclaimed solo albums over the last decade, performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall and Newport Jazz to Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, and worked in the studio and on the road with the likes of Richard Swift (The Shins, The Arcs), Jon Brion (Spoon, Aimee Mann), A.C. Newman (The New Pornographers), and Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers, The Lumineers) among others. Its safe to say that no one sees the keyboard quite like Marco Benevento's genre-blind mashup of indie rock, jazz and skewed improvisation, the LA Times raved, while NPR said he combines the thrust of rock, the questing of jazz and the experimental ecstasy of jam, and Rolling Stone praised the textures and colors available in his keyboards and arsenal of manipulated pedals and effects, along with his deceptively rich, catchy melodies and straight-ahead grooves.

Darrin Bradbury - Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs [LP]

Darrin Bradbury - Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs [LP]

New Vinyl: $19.98

Darrin Bradbury writes about the way things really are in America – a singular perspective shaped by a natural gift for storytelling and a sly sense of humor. A self-described folk satirist who has toured the country for more than a decade, Bradbury collects his oddball observations in his newest album, Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs. Bradbury grew up in New Jersey with an early interest in performing, partly because of his mother’s career as a circus clown. At the age of 7, he felt certain that he would either become a songwriter or a cartoonist. He learned to play guitar as a vessel to tell his stories. By the age of 18, he’d discovered Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac, and Paul Simon, and decided to hit the road. At 25, he moved to Nashville, to try making it as a songwriter. For three months, he slept in his car in a Walmart parking lot, and developed a local following by playing open mic nights. With a handful of self-funded EPs and albums, Bradbury steadily cultivated a national audience by touring constantly. Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs is Bradbury’s first release for ANTI- Records. - Album Produced by Kenneth Pattengale of The Milk Carton Kids - Featured players on this album include a “who’s who” of Nashville players including Margo Price (featured vocal on “The Trouble With Time” ) , Kenneth Pattengale (vocals, mellotron), Jeremy Ivey (bass, piano), Alex Munoz (guitar, lap steel, vocals) and Dillion Napier (drums).
