When people on the East Coast of the United States begin inexplicable killing themselves, the suicides are initially blamed on a terrorist attack. But as a Philadelphia science teacher (Mark Wahlberg) flees the city with his wife (Zooey Deschanel) and their friend's daughter (Ashlyn Sanchez), they begin to wonder if the phenomenon has more natural roots. M. Night Shyamalan's timely thriller also stars John Leguizamo.Reviews:
Things were just starting to unravel for M. Night Shyamalan when he met writer Michael Bamberger in 2004. His pensive follow-up to smash hit Signs, The Village, alienated audiences and critics with its improbable twist ending, and he was about to encounter heavy studio static with his shaky script to eventual follow-up Lady in the Water. Bamberger’s ensuing bio, The Man Who Heard Voices, inadvertently painted the popular young director—dubbed the next Hitchcock or Spielberg by avid fans—a clueless megalomaniac. For all of the M. Night haters out there, there very well may still be more lovers, despite the disastrous Lady. Shyamalan tried to return to form with this summer’s eco-thriller The Happening, in which folks start inexplicably (and gruesomely) offing themselves. Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel and John Leguizamo play the befuddled leads and the flick did decent box office. Is M. Night truly back, though? To paraphrase AC/DC, it’s a long way back to the top.
